Watch Face Designer Interview: RZwatchfaces

RZWatchfaces joined Facer in late 2018 and already amassed more than 7k followers on the platform in less than a year. This watch face creator out of Sevilla, Spain immediately got the attention of Facer’s editorial team thanks to his design esthetics and ability to pack a ton of information in a clean way within the small screen real-estate afforded by watch faces. We could not be more excited to learn about more about him today!

Hi RZwatchfaces!

Tell us a little about yourself…

Well, first of all, I would like to start by saying that I am very happy to have joined Facer, it is a fantastic platform, one of the most important in its field and with an incredible team, that not only help you with everything you need, but they also make you feel like an important part of their great family.

My name is Ricardo, I am 35 + 5 years old, and I have Peter Pan syndrome (I don’t want to grow up). I’m from Sevilla, Spain and I work in the marketing department of a large company in my city. In addition to marketing, I am also in charge of contacting our suppliers in Asia, which has given me the possibility to travel to China, and I hope that in the near future I can also go to other countries. (In particular the USA)

I am fascinated with computer programming at a hobby level, and I really like creating small applications for work and even for my home, I am a technology geek.

How did you get started with watch face design?

Well, in my humble opinion, ever since the first smartwatch I owned, I never liked the default designs that came with them. So I felt the need to create my own designs and look for ways to use them in my smartwatch. I searched and tried several platforms that allowed me to do it, some with more options and others with less, until finally I found the best of all of them and here I am! It’s something that I love!

What is your watch face design process like? Do you sketch first, start in photoshop, illustrator?

To be honest, there are times I even dream of watch designs that I then try to remember and get them on to the computer, but most of the time I like to start with a blank canvas. Normally I start designing something and I change this and then I tweak that until I am happy with it, which usually ends up being totally different to the first sketch. I always use Illustrator and Photoshop, although you can make beautiful designs using only the tools of the Facer creator.

Which watch face are you the most proud of?

I feel very proud of my Z104 because it reached a number of syncs and sales far superior to anything I had done before, and I received positive comments from many people letting me know that they were delighted and that made me feel very happy. I am also very proud of ONE because I was chosen as the winner of the first week of a Mobvoi contest last summer and I always thought that opened the doors to the Partner program.

Any other watch face designers you love on Facer?

I think I have been very fortunate to get to know the works of many great designers and even luckier to be able to maintain friendships and communication with many of them like GRR, CFW Projects, BA Watchfaces. I also want to say that I admire the work of Dario Marnoni, GAUSS and many others, I could mention dozens of them, all facer designers are great!

Where do you see watch faces in the next few years?

I think it is a market that is continuously growing, in the coming years we will discover great designers and we will be able to show off their work in our watches.

Any tips for aspiring watch face designers?

It is difficult to know what people like, I would even say that it is impossible, that is why I recommend that you design for yourself, if you like it, we will all like it.

Anything else you’d like to add?

I would like to say that I feel very proud to be part of Facer, to be able to share my designs with everyone and to meet many amazing people, and during this time I have been able to practice and improve my English, which is another thing that I’m passionate about.
